What is nanotechnology?
Nanotechnology is undoubtedly one of the fastest growing fields of science.
It is interdisciplinary field that combines the power of many sciences, including physics, chemistry, materials science and medicine. The main assumption of nanotechnology is controlled creation and use of structures, materials and devices with nanometric dimensions.
The prefix “nano” is derived from the Greek word meaning dwarf, it is used as a prefix for many units of measurement and means one billionth, or 10-9. The term nanomaterials refers to commonly occurring chemical compounds at the nanometer scale.
According to the definition of the European Commission, nanomaterials are chemical substances or materials with a particle size of 1 – 100 nm in at least one dimension. Small sizes of nanomaterials are the cause of different properties of nanomaterials relative to the properties of the same substances at the micro and macro scale. Better mechanical and optical properties, increased chemical and antibacterial activity, lower environmental burden are only some of the features of nanomaterials, which are also one of their greatest advantages.
There are a lot of methods of obtaining nanomaterials. The general classification divides them into two approaches:
- “top-down” – in brief, these methods rely on miniaturization of the macroscopic material into smaller parts, so that the final size is in the range of 1-100 nm, e.g: lithography, electrochemical methods or laser-based techniques,
- “bottom-up” – refers to methods where nanomaterials are created by self-assembly, atom by atom formation. Among techniques used in this approach, we can distinguish chemical reduction methods, vapour deposition or plasma assisted deposition.
